May Day is traditionally held on a Monday but this year has been put back to Friday 8 May 2020. VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe.
Up and down the country, we should all have been enjoying a long bank holiday weekend starting Friday 8th May to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day; however, that’s just not possible at the moment. In some ways, lots of what we are doing at the moment – staying home to keep everybody safe – is very relevant to VE Day celebrations and hopefully, in the future, we will all be able to celebrate being together again.Instead, we’ve created some tasks for you to find out a bit about what VE Day is and provided some activities that will help you to have a mini-celebration of your own at home, if you want to. Wouldn’t it be great if you could still feel connected to other people in Dunnington by decorating your house or by celebrating in the same way!
Maybe you could also share some pictures of your VE Day work or your celebrations with your teachers on Seesaw. The ‘This is Dunnington’ facebook page is also going to link their picture trail to our VE Day tasks to allow more of you to feel connected to your community.
Whilst most of the celebrations will begin on Friday 8th May (the actual anniversary of VE Day), don’t miss the chance to join in with a special live stream sing-a-long commemoration with Tom Carradine on Thursday 7th May at 11am. Finally, if you’re missing school, why not try the Dunnington School Treasure hunt, which will also be in the VE Day folder. Have a go with your family – how many of the items from around school can you identify? The answers will be put into the folder the week after so you can see how many you managed to guess correctly! Enjoy celebrating and stay safe.
There are some suggested activities for both KS1 and KS2 but feel free to have a go at any that you fancy.
