Welcome to another week of home learning! This week we will continue our topic What a Wonderful World by exploring Australia in geography and English during the Home Learning section of the week and exploring The Great Barrier Reef in the School Learning section. Lots incredible animals to learn about and beautiful landscapes to explore! In phonics we will be covering the last new topic for the year – the ‘er’ and ‘est’ suffixes – while in science we will be moving on to food chains and both sections of maths will provide revision and extension activities from earlier topics this year. Finally, in PSHE we will be reading the story of Elmer and celebrating the value of difference in our world.

Home Learning
Phonics:
This week we will be introducing the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’.
1.Introducing ‘er’ and ‘est’: Watch my Seesaw video to help you understand the difference.
2. Er or Est?: Complete the attached activity comparing pictures with the ‘er’ or the ‘est’ suffix OR create your own similar activity by asking an adult to write some words ready for you to draw the pictures (e.g. smaller, smallest). This activity is also available on Seesaw.
3. Comparing Sentences: Write sentences using the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’ to compare different things (e.g. pigs are quicker than cows, but goats are quickest). Use one of the attached comparing activity sheets or write your own.
English (Geography Link):
This week’s English will link closely with themes in geography around the country of Australia.
1.Australian Animals Comprehension: Have a go at the attached Australian Animal reading comprehension activity. There are 3 levels – as we haven’t done this style of activity before I suggest 1 star will be tricky enough for many, but please choose what you feel is most appropriate.
2. What am I? Poems: Create a ‘What am I?’ Poem about an Australian animal. See the attached Seesaw video to get you started. You could write this out in your book or on the attached paper. For more facts on different Australian animals, see the attached fact sheet.
Spellings
This week we will be recapping the plural use of ‘s’ and ‘es’.
Maths:
This week’s home learning maths will review some of our number work, stretching to higher numbers up to 100. If you would like some more learning videos to support you some are available here: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ (some are a little long, and not the most exciting, so you may wish to just dip into bits if you’re finding engagement is a challenge).
1.Counting to 100: Choose one or more of these activities to have a go at:
- Starter: Filling in the missing numbers on the 100 square.
- More Practice: Have a go at the missing numbers activity OR write your own.
- Challenge: If you’d like a bigger challenge have a go at the attached number square jigsaw activity for a bit of problem solving!
2. Place Value Dienes: Have a go at the attached dienes challenge creating 2 digit numbers (3 digit for a challenge only) by counting the dienes. Watch my Seesaw video to get you started.
3. Partitioning 10s and 1s: Take a look at my Seesaw video to get you started then choose 2 or more activities to have a go at:
- Starter: Try the magicians partitioning activity OR write your own.
- More Practise: Have a go at the part whole models partitioning and the tens and ones partitioning activity OR draw/ write your own.
- Challenge: Try the code breaking place value challenge.
CHALLENGE ACTIVITY: I have attached a few problem-solving questions for place value you may wish to have a go at. Note: Q3 I think is too challenging at this stage so please feel free to leave this one.
Science:
This week we will be taking a break from habitats to move on to food chains.

2. Food Chain Sorting: Have a go at the attached activity sorting the pictures into different food chains. When you’ve finished why not take a picture and explain your understanding on Seesaw.
3. Draw Your Own Food Chains: Using the attached template or drawing your own, draw some different food chains – you could be inspired by the things you find in your garden or the animals of Australia!
Geography:
This week we’re going on a journey to Oceania and particularly Australia!

2. Share Your Learning: To share what you’ve learning why not make a poster AND/OR create a ‘Visit Australia’ advert so share on Seesaw. You could tell me what animals I might see, about the landmarks, the weather and where in the world it is.

PSHE:
This week we will be exploring difference and reading the story of Elmer to help us.
1.Elmer – Exploring Difference: Take time to notice and discuss difference using my attached sheet or using this as inspiration for a conversation, then watch my Seesaw video of the story of Elmer and talk through some questions. When you’re done create Elmer collage to celebrate difference.

1.Phonics Treasure Hunt: Get an adult to hide these words then hunt them out. If you say them correctly an adult will give you a letter. Can you find all the letters to work out the hidden message?
English/ Geography:
In English and Geography we will be exploring the Great Barrier Reef!
1.Introducing the Great Barrier Reef: Have a look at some of these to introduce the Great Barrier Reef. Why not create a big mind map to write down facts after you watch each one to help you remember key details.

2. Mapping the Great Barrier Reef: Complete the attached map filling in where The Great Barrier Reef is, alongside other key world landmarks.
3. The Great Barrier Reef Factfile: Write a short factfile using the information you have learnt in previous lessons. For more challenge try to think of your own subheading questions. Two templates are available for this – in school we may blow this up to A3 for more space to write, you could add flaps instead to help increase the length if you wish.
Maths:
This week we will be doing a quick recap of division and sharing.

2. Sharing Practise: Have a go at the attached activity practising your understanding of sharing. Again be ready to use equipment to help you.
